The word “Halloween” comes from All Hallows’ Eve—the evening before the feast of All Saints. “Hallow” is an old word for “holy one,” or saint. So, despite its current reputation for haunted houses and dramatic skeleton décor, Halloween began as a vigil for a holy day.
