Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Times

Dear Church Family,

Let us remember that “His love endures forever.”  This is the message proclaimed to us this week in our readings and especially in the Gospel. Who could not admire David in the first reading who did not take revenge on Saul who was after him. We are to be kind and merciful to all in every instance. He says, …do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”  This means we are bound as followers of Christ to love and forgive any and every person even those who may be considered our enemy.

I know this is a tall order but Jesus proclaims this time and time again throughout the Scriptures even up to the time of His death on the Cross. “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”  Christ called this better attitude of life a New Commandment of Love that replaced the old one of “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”

Jesus is so patient with us, stepping out the instructions as to how to handle the situation. Don’t fight back, be openly giving, do to others as you would have them do to you.”  Christ not only talks the talk, but walks the walk in his exemplary life and model for us. If we don’t show love and kindness and forgiveness to others, why should we expect God to give us these same gifts? “We are, therefore, to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48). Amen. Alleluia!!

Love, Father Bob
