Give us the Holy Spirit

Dear Church Family,

The words of the Sacred Scripture that really impressed me was the last words of the gospel.  “If you then, who are wicked know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”  Give us the Holy Spirit.  In fact, when we pray it’s always in the Holy Spirit. When we do any good deed, when we do what we should do as God’s people, it is in the Holy Spirit.

We need the Holy Spirit and in the Gospel the Lord gives us the perfect prayer, The Our Father, also known as the Lord’s Prayer.  Each time we recite it we should meditate on what we are saying so that it becomes meaningful to us.  We say:

Our Father who art in heaven – I am your special child and you are boundless in the heavens and present in the heart of everyone.

Hollowed be thy name – May we always respect your name, and may it bring us joy.

Thy kingdom come – May there be love and peace amongst all the inhabitants of the earth.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven – May I love myself and others as I love myself.

Give us this day our daily bread – Just as I hunger for food, let me also hunger for your love and you in my life.

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us – If I have hurt others, forgive me. If others have hurt me, give me strength to forgive them.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil – Lord help me to stay out of situations where I might sin and protect me from all evil.

Amen.

Even though our life may be challenging, our God wants to give us every opportunity to come to Him and be forgiven.  He wants to give us the chance to start over.  That’s what the whole gospel seems to proclaim.  Alleluia!

Love,

Fr. Bob
