Blessed are you when people hate you…

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Church Family,

During every Sunday and on weekday celebrations of the Mass, we listen to the Lord speaking to us in the Scriptures through the prophets or from Christ Our Lord, Himself.

The Prophet Jeremiah proclaimed that complete and sincerest trust belongs entirely to God alone and he said  the Lord curses anyone who transfers this trust that belongs to God alone onto human beings. This is because human beings are not always trustworthy in their dealings with other people. They often cannot be trusted and dependable always. The Scriptures compared these people to a barren tree in the desert that enjoys no change of season but stands in a wasted and empty land. On the other hand, Jeremiah said that there would be blessings on one who trusts in the Lord, who like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream and will bear fruit in season and out of season.

In the same line of teaching from the Lord Himself, He pronounced blessings on the disciples of whom He said, “Blessed are you who are poor for the kingdom of heaven hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son God. Rejoice and leap for joy for your reward will be great in heaven! The reverse would be the case, if you fail to work for the coming of the kingdom. Amen.
